Faith is "born" when we hear the Word through pastors, teachers, conferences, etc. Hearing can stimulate an appetite for the Word of God.
My faith was born when I accepted a friend’s invitations to join her Bible study and then also to go to church with her family. The book that we used during that study was Seamless by Angie Smith, which is an excellent study that shows how each book of the Bible is interconnected and cohesive. It is also a great study for someone who is unfamiliar with Scripture, like I was, because it entails going into Scripture to answer numerous questions, which then leads you to understand how all of Scripture is tied together. Along with doing that study, I began to hear the Word of God through the pastor at the new church I started attending. That church really connected with me. The pastor taught through Scripture in a way that was understandable and relatable to my life.
The Bible study and church services really stimulated my appetite for God’s Word. They made the Bible much more understandable for me, and I wanted to read and learn more. I continued to read on my own, and I listened to commentary on the chapters I was reading, which gave me better insight. I put the Bible app on my phone and started reading the daily verse and devotionals. I listened to the pastor’s previous sermons, which were available online through the church’s website.
I wanted to study more in small groups with other women - I craved that type of learning environment. I also attended conferences and read various books that dealt with topics of faith and Christianity. One thing just led to another - I wanted to be fed spiritually.
But, taking that first step was crucial. For me, it was saying yes to attending a Bible study. I had never been to one before, and I really had no idea what to expect. I was a believer, but God had only ever been in the background of my life. I wasn’t raised in a God-centered home.
Once I began to learn the Truth - God’s Word - I wanted to know more Truth.
My friend, start where you are! Take that first step, then the next, and the next. Once you run toward God, it will change your life! I guarantee it.
